MUSEO DELLA MEMORIA AUDITIVA - MUSEUM OF AUDITORY MEMORY (Auditory Memory and Sound Archive)

Along with the “Fountains Project”, we are working on another project dealing with the conservation of the auditory memory. We aim at creating a free and open web archive where it is possible to store and preserve those sounds that are disappearing. If we consider, for example, ethnological museums, we know they retain artifacts and tools fallen into disuse. There is both video and photo evidence of them, but no audio. Since people who would use them are no longer alive, we can just try, as best as we can, to re-use them and reproduce their sounds, aware of the fact they won’t be like the original ones.
In 50 years we might wonder: “what does the scythe sound like?”.
Coming from everywhere and through different agents (field recorders), the sounds must meet precise quality criteria and must be accompanied by pictures and descriptions of the subjects recorded. In the first step of the project, access to the sounds recorded and stored will be possible through a simple list; as the number of tracks increases, it will be possible to go through an advanced research. The first filed recording is the sound of scythe beating and sharpening and grass mowing (from the player below you can listen an excerpt).
A museum at no cost, a common heritage as free as water.
